Ella's Tea Party Remains Committed to Arizona Childhood Cancer Research Special License Plate
The proposed Arizona Childhood Cancer Research special license plate will bring awareness to the challenges facing researchers and provide much needed financial resources for their efforts to find safer, more effective treatments
PHOENIX, AZ, July 24, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Last week, Governor Brewer vetoed Senate Bill 1017, which would have authorized the Childhood Cancer Research special license plate in Arizona. In explaining her decision to veto the bill, Governor Brewer cited concerns with "problematic language" that might conflict with state law.
While Ella's Tea Party is disappointed with the decision to veto Senate Bill 1017, we look forward to seeing revised legislation that will correct the issues cited in the Governor's explanation of her veto.
Ella's Tea Party remains committed to raising the funds necessary to implement the Childhood Cancer Research special license plate. This special license plate will give researchers a valuable new tool that will raise awareness and provide much needed financial resources so that they may continue their life-saving efforts to find safer, more effective treatments for childhood cancer and other rare childhood disease.
Today, one in five children diagnosed with cancer succumb to the disease, making cancer the number one non-violent cause of death in children. Each year in the US, more than 12,000 children are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer develops much differently in children and their bodies respond much differently to treatment. Many of today's treatments are based on chemotherapy agents developed many decades ago that can have considerable toxicity effects in patients. Couple these factors with the fact that many rare cancers are found only in children, and it is no wonder that researchers face extraordinary challenges developing safer, more effective treatments.
With the introduction of the Arizona Childhood Cancer Research special license plate, Arizona will join other states around the nation who have taken a stand to do more in the area of funding research. With research, comes a cure.
